For many St. Louisans, the gravelly voice of the late Jack Carney was a mainstay of KMOX listeners in most of the '70s and early '80s. In fact, Carney, father of current KMOX radio personality John Carney, often attracted one in four radio listeners when he was on the air.

KMOX has released what it calls "volume one" of radio history with about an hour of highlights from the Jack Carney Show. John Carney narrates it ... and quite well I might add.

You can hear pride in John's voice as he talks of his dad's success. You can also hear the family resemblance when it comes to the way they sound.

The CD, on sale for $12.99, begins with a good, though brief, history of Jack Carney before landing at KMOX radio.

The CD has several clips featuring highlights of the Carney era including stars such as Bob Costas (who some say was helped greatly by his exposure on the Carney show), Jimmy Dean, Red Skelton, Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy and Flip Wilson. …
