In many libraries, after the computer, the printer is the most important piece of office equipment. The pages that emerge from the printer are how many (most?) ideas are communicated, and how first impressions are made.

When Hewlett-Packard (HP) introduced the first LaserJet printer in 1984, the company set a new standard for affordable printing quality. Now a new HP LaserJet printer has been introduced, one that combines the most advanced HP LaserJet printer technology with a low price.

The new marvel is the compact Hp Laserjet IRP printer, which offers the advanced capabilities of high-end laser printers for only $1,595 (U.S. list). The IIIP has the best print quality of any low-cost 300-dots-per-inch las- printer as well as the ability to quickly scale, rotate, and manage type and graphics.

Like other members of the HP LaserJet family, the HIP combines compatibility with all popular software packages with HP's reputation for reliability and support. Compatible with the HP LaserJet III and JuD printers, the IIIP is the company's newest low-cost laser printer in a compact design.

Built into the IIIP is the HP PCL 5 printer language, an industry-standard page description language that makes it possible to scale fonts and perform other text manipulations on the fly. It also boasts HP's proprietary Resolution Enhancement Technology (RET), which improves print quality in both text and graphics.

Higher Quality Printing

To produce text and graphics with smoother edges, the IIIP uses HP's Resolution EnhanceMent Technology. RET adjusts the position and size of dots to smooth curves and limit toner pooling at intersections.

Resolution Enhancement Technology improves edge smoothness and prints sharper points and line intersections by adjusting dot size and position in relationship to neighboring dots. In conventional laser printing, these dots are all the same size so portions of dots frequently fall outside the boundaries of curves, angled lines, and points in letters, causing a stair step, or jagged edge appearance.

Resolution Enhancement Technology fills in and smoothes these troublesome areas by changing the size and position of a dot in relation to the dots around it. The printer Makes these adjustments automatically and does not depend on software. The resulting crisp edges, sharp points, d clean line intersections provide users with professional-looking documents.

The quality of output is such that a user can generate a document with fancy font effects, such as reverse type and rotated text, print it out on the HP LaserJet IIIP printer, and send it to a quick printer for low-cost publishing. For low-volume documents, the HP Laserjet IIIP printer can be used in place of outside printing services.

The IIIP also uses the HP LaserJet Toner Imaging System HP's terminology for toner cartridge) with specially formulated toner particles for solid blacks and deeper coverage. This produces sharper text and graphics and more curate reproduction of scanned images, including photographs.

Each HP LaserJet Toner Imaging system is capable of printing 3,500 pages of text. The cartridge is recyclable. Printer Language: Compatibility,

Fonts, and Speed

The HP LaserJet IIIP printer comes with HP's industry-standard PCL 5 printer language. The printer language defines how type and graphics are laid out to create the printed page.

PCL 5 performs three major tasks: it provides software compatibility with all top PC software packages; it allows the use of typefaces in a variety of styles, sizes, and patterns; and it improves graphics printing speed.
