Vodafone Creates Team to Launch 3G

Vodafone is creating a global marketing team dedicated to the launch of its 3G mobile phone services later this year.

The team will include senior WPP executive David Wheldon and former O2 head of brand Anna Russell. They will be responsible for develop-ing Vodafone's biggest-ever global marketing campaign.

Marketing has learned that Vodafone has been scouring the mobile industry to fill new consumer and business marketing roles in the run-up to the 3G roll-out, scheduled for the fourth quarter of this year.

Having already secured the services of Wheldon, group chief executive of WPP's Team Vodafone division, Vodafone this week brought in Russell, who will join in an undisclosed senior marketing and communications role.

Wheldon is still contracted to WPP, but it is understood he will join Vodafone in the next few months in the role of global director of marketing and brand communications. He will report to chief marketing officer Peter Bamford.

Wheldon will work with David Haines, Vodafone's global brand director, on a marketing strategy for the launch of the 3G services, vital to its future business strategy. …
