Description: The GeoSafari Phonics Pad is a tablet-sized pad developed to guide the learning of letters, sounds, and beginning reading skills. Children learn by listening and pressing the pictures on the Phonics Pad's illustrated, touch-sensitive cards. More than 100 hours of independent activities are available.

Specifications:The stand-alone unit is battery operated and can be attached to an AC adapter. Included are 128 colorfully illustrated cards that are inserted onto the pad to guide students in matching sounds, letters, and more.

Audience: The manufacturer recommends ages 3 and up. The reviewer recommends that even younger students could begin to play with the tool, since the material starts with learning the alphabet.

Installation: The GeoSafari Phonics Pad is a stand-alone device that does not require access to a computer. The only set-up required is the installation of four "D" size batteries. To install the batteries, a large screw on the back of the pad must be loosened before the batteries can be slid into place. An optional AC adapter may be plugged into the top of the pad. Content/Features: The touch-sensitive cards introduce students to learning the alphabet, matching rhyming pictures, and following directions. The units progress through consonant sounds, short vowels, long vowels, blends and digraphs, and on to advanced phonics and words. Audio directions let the student know how to play each card. The audio also identifies whether or not student activity choices are correct.

An on/off button is located on the top right side of each card. If the pad is left on with no action, the unit will shut off after 5 minutes. The volume can be adjusted. Activities can be repeated by pushing the "repeat" button.

The Explore button at the bottom of the page begins the sequence of events for the card. Also at the bottom is a quiz button that launches a test of the concepts covered in the lesson card. An additional button allows students to take the quiz at their own pace. …
