Clarion, the Newspaper of the Professional Staff Congress/City University of New York (May/June 2003), has a "Contract Special" issue on the new bargaining agenda for 2003. In addition to a list of contract demands, Clarion also gives background on the CUNY budget and various organizational tactics prior to these contract demands.

The New School faculty of New York City held a rally on 21 May 2003 for faculty union rights. A majority of New School University faculty wants a union, but the administration has mounted a legal challenge to disenfranchise hundreds of New School faculty members.

The 130 music, dance and art teachers at the Kaufman Center, a community arts school on the Upper West Side in Manhattan, currently receive no health or pension benefits and no job security. While the administration received raises of 20-30% between 1998 and 2001, the teachers averaged yearly raises of 50 cents per class. After an intense eight-month union-busting campaign by their employer, the teachers finally won union representation with Local 802 in a National Labor Relations Board election in November 2002. …
