A Multimedia Planning Guide from Apple

Article excerpt

You and your team members have been working hard on a technology plan that fits in with the broader strategic plan for your district. It is one of a new generation of technology plans, going beyond the student acquisition of computer-based skills to show how the district can develop new modes of learning and teaching with the support of technology. It is time for the long-awaited presentation to the school board.

Imagine you get to the end of the presentation and one of the board members looks at you quizzically and asks, "What do you mean by this 'active and cooperative learning' stuff? Can you give some examples? And what does technology have to d with it?"

Apple's new Teaching, Learning, and Technology--A Planning Guide (TLT) is designed to help you in just such a situation. TLT includes a videodisc with an hour of video clips and information, a CD-ROM with nearly two hours of audio interviews, and both a text-based and an interactive plan book. With the help of this interactive kit, it would be easy to answer your board member's questions by accessing video examples of classrooms around the country engaged in active learning, cooperative learning, interdisciplinary learning, and so on. Then, to demonstrate the role of technology in these classroom activities, you would simply pop up screens showing what hardware and software were used in each specific application.

TLT is an innovative multimedia-based information resource system and tool. It is one of a new breed of second-generation productivity tools, combining vast amounts of video-, audio-, and text-based information resources with an extensive set of computer-based planning, presentation, and production tools.

In addition to its usefulness as a presentation took, there are a variety of other ways in which TLT can be used. Educators, business people, parents, and anyone else involved in strategic planning can use this multimedia resource to browse through and explore what other schools and classrooms are doing around the country. …
