Husband Kills Lorain PL Staffer in Library Parking Lot

A 62-year-old retired factory worker has been charged with aggravated murder in the January 20 shooting death of Barbara Kallas, 57, a library assistant at the Lorain (Ohio) Public Library. Police say George Kallas left his wife to die in the library's parking lot after shooting her with a .38-caliber handgun.

Witnesses saw Kallas pacing for nearly 20 minutes across the street from the library before his wife pulled into the lot, the Akron Beacon-Journal reported January 22. Police say he approached her as she got out of the car and shot her four times in the chest and once in the arm. Elementary and middle school students on their way to the library were among those who witnessed the killing.

According to witnesses, Kallas then walked calmly into the library and sat down next to a security guard. Mark Pierce, a patron in the video section at the time, told Cleveland WEWS-TV news reporters that the man said, "I just shot and killed my wife," then gave the handgun to the security guard, who contacted police. …
