When people meet me they can't tell that I am a lesbian. They know me before they know my sexual orientation; thus I show them that those who are "different" are really quite the same.

Because of this, I originally decided to attend ray high school in Houston as a "straight" student. But I quickly found a group of people who were like me, along with a girl to call my own. I'm a sophomore and she was a senior, beautiful, and a great friend. And we dated for a short time at the beginning of this school year before she killed herself. She had talked to me about doing it--afraid of what her family and other friends would do or say if they found out she was a lesbian--and we both thought she was over it. But she wasn't.

Because of my girlfriend's death, I finally knew what I stood for and who I was, so I decided to do what she couldn't come out to everyone. …
