No Distance Too Far for EI Paso

For years EI Paso Chapter No. 84 struggled in vain to overcome the high costs of providing its small group of members with the required classes to earn IREM designations. The chapter was also hindered by the fact its somewhat remote location made it difficult and costly for members to travel to other locations to take necessary courses. After chapter leadership unsuccessfully tried to get local companies to sponsor their employees, they found the EI Paso Housing Authority, which committed to pay for 15 candidates to attend classes and eventually helped the chapter profit from its own course offerings.

At last year's Leadership and Legislative Summit, the chapter was honored with the Chapter of the Year Award (Category 1--Fewer than 31 CPM members) and was recognized with a Best Practices Award for the Housing Authority program.

"This year the Housing Authority has already committed to helping sponsor 10 more classes," said 2004 Chapter President Jack F. Reed, Jr., CPM. "We're in the process of trying to recruit CPM candidates in neighboring states to get them to take our courses."

The Housing Authority not only provides financial resources, but offers the chapter the free use of its offices as course instruction rooms. …
