How did you get into marketing?

It's the only area of business which would give a responsible job to a music graduate. I play the piano and clarinet and, although my training is classical, I did have an enjoyable spell in an 80s synth band while at school

What would be your dream job?

Conductor of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.

You are on a desert island with one person from the marketing industry. Who is it?

Amy Smith, the former managing director of Wieden & Kennedy's London office. I met her at a pitch a few years ago and she strikes me as the sort of live wire you would need as company on a desert island.

What's your favourite cliche?

'At the end of the day ...' (in Brummie accent).

Who or what do you hate the most?

George Bush and sloppy grammar. These are not necessarily mutually exclusive.

Who do you admire the most?

Ludwig van Beethoven - he composed some of the greatest music ever while profoundly deaf. …
