Old Milwaukee Beer Ads Gets Nod for Annual Hubbard 'Award' for Irresponsibility

Stroh Brewery's Old Milwaukee Swedish Bikini Team commercials was the dubious "winner" of the 1991 Harlan Page Hubbard Memorial Award for the "most misleading, unfair or irresponsible" ad campaign in the category of alcoholic beverages, the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc., (NCADD) announced. The award, named after a 1890s huckster of quack compounds, was one of ten such "lemon" prizes presented by various consumer and health organizations at mock ceremonies Dec. 3 in Washington, D.C., conducted by the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI). R.J. Reynolds, nominated by the Coalition on Smoking or Health, was similarly "honored" for its Camel Cigarette ads.

NCADD said that "Old Milwaukee, the beer that has told young men for years that 'it doesn't get any better than this,' this year tells them that it does get better because now beer and a bevy of buxom blondes in bikinis will appear out of nowhere. This campaign's irresponsibility hits new heights. …
