IPC to launch German title following deal with Burda

The UK's biggest magazine company IPC has formed a joint venture with German publisher Burda, with plans to launch its first German title later this year.

The new Munich-based company will take IPC into the German market for the first time. It already has a joint venture in France and licenses its women's monthly Essentials in eight European countries.

But the new alliance could also pave the way for reciprocal launches in the UK. "This is not just a joint venture but a strategic alliance. There's an obvious opportunity for Burda to publish German derived magazines in the UK," says John Mellon, chairman of IPC.

Burda, which publishes 13 consumer and women's titles in Germany, was the last of the big four German publishers to have crossed the Channel with fashion magazine Burda Moden in 1989.

Bertelsmann subsidiary Gruner & Jahr was the first to move into the UK with Prima in 1986. …
