At the recent international meeting of STAR users in Washington, DC, Cuadra Associates (CA) unveiled MARCplus--its soon to be released library support package designed to enhance the management and retrieval of MARC-structured cataloging data.

STAR is CA's text management and information retrieval system used by a wide spectrum of libraries and archives for both bibliographic and non-bibliographic data. The new MARCplus capabilities combine full support for MARC data with all of the inherent flexibility of STAR.

Libraries and archives are among the largest group of STAR users, according to Dr. Carlos A. Cuadra, president of Cuadra Associates. "Many of them," he said, "have been importing MARC data and converting it for use in more or less typical bibliographic databases. Now they will have the option of retaining data in MARC format and using all the facilities of STAR to enhance their MARC records and to produce MARC output when they need to."

According to Cuadra, "Among the uses that various STAR sites are likely to make of the new MARCplus capabilities are adding local management fields; designing additional reports using STAR's built-in capabilities for sorting multiple or interfiled fields in proper collation order; meeting special retrieval requirements by defining search fields for specific tags and subfields; linking certain fields to authority-file databases; and using STAR's global operation capabilities to make changes to data. …
