The City of Colorado Springs, Colo., lacked money and water, but that didn't keep Michael Chaplinsky of Turf Feeding Systems from renovating its parks and sports fields with fertigation.

As this issue went to press, Chaplinsky was in Colorado Springs planning 21 fertigation systems to serve more than 250 acres.

The sports fields and parks were heavily used and thus had difficulty recovering from drought. When turf begins to witt, the common reaction is to turn up the irrigation cycle, although the key is in proper nutrition and not in over-watering.

"We can recover damaged areas quicker than anybody," Chaplinsky claims. "We can bring turf back without acid or gypsum. We bring the biology of the soil back to fife. Organic additives [microbes and humates] that are applied with the fertilizer can buffer the sodium and modify the pH so it's not a problem. Other people use organics in the fertilizer, but we've found special products that are very effective. …
