'Utility' + 'Vehicle' = Utility Vehicle

Article excerpt

Though the utility ve- hicle may not be as valuable to you as it is to, say, a sports-turf manager or a golf-course superintendent, there's a place for it in your equipment repertoire--especially if some maintenance projects demand on-site, full-time crews.

A number of design features and attachment options give you the opportunity to choose from many different models to find the right vehicle for your specific needs. Incorporate a variety of attachments like utility carts, tool holders, aerators and medical units (to name a few), and the utility vehicle can be completely customized.

Equipment like high-flotation tires ensure minimal ground compaction when driving on sensitive turf, and attachments like seeders and sprayers come in handy.

Productivity, durability, operator comfort and quiet operation have driven many recent design improvements. Most new models can be put chased with contoured bucket seats, power steering, large storage areas, cup and radio holders and 12-volt power outlets for radios and cell phones.

And here are a few of the options available:

* all-wheel drive

* cargo and van boxes

* tool holders/carriers

* racks with pins and key locks

* front blades

* sprayers

* seeders

* sweepers and power brooms

* topdressers

* aerators

* drag finishers

* water rangers

* medical units

* hard cab with windshield and washers * LP gas conversion kits

The turf utility-vehicle market can be loosely divided into heavy duty, mid-duty and light duty (runabout) vehicles. At the high end are the Cushman Turf Truckster, Toro Workman, John Deem ProGator and others. They are designed for up to 3,000-lb. payloads. You can get liquid-cooled gasoline or diesel engines, depending on how they'll be used.

Mid-duty vehicles are powered by gasoline, diesel or electricity. …
