I've just returned from Cannes, where I viewed some of the best commercials in the world. I came back full of enthusiasm for creativity, and so was really looking forward to writing Adwatch.

I don't want to slag anyone off. I'm from the 'if you can't say something good, don't say anything at all' school. There are many reasons an agency turns out a certain type of work, and unless you know everything about how that piece turned out the way it did, I believe you're not entitled to knock it in public.

That said, it is crazy that I can't remember the creative content of any of these ads, despite all the money spent on getting them into the top 20 most-recognised commercials in the UK.

Working down the list I came to the Burger King ad. Shot in America, it shows a man and a woman pushing a broken-down car. They push it past a Burger King, and she disappears. He doesn't notice and keeps pushing the car until it falls over a cliff. He despairs thinking his girlfriend's gone with it, while she is tucking into a chicken bagel. …
