Despite the fact that I have supportive parents and I attend a very liberal university, I still possessed negative feelings about being gay. I was verbally and physically attacked as an adolescent in school, and as a result I still struggled with serf-worth. I didn't care if I passed my classes or caused harm to myself. I was shy around new people, and I feared straight men.

But I found a way to overcome it. In order to graduate from the drama studies program at State University of New York's Purchase College, I had to produce a play. So I decided to create a one-man performance piece about gay youths. Over the span of a year I conducted a series of interviews with gay students, adults, and teachers, who talked about the violence and discrimination faced by gay youths in the public school system. I then turned these interviews into a collection of monologues and titled it Condemned in the Classroom. …
