Summer fluffin', had me a blast

Sometimes all that poolside sunning makes your brain hurt, and you just need something deliciously dopey. The one DVD you must buy this summer, no matter what, is the flat-out-bonkers Showgirls: The VIP Edition(MGM Home Video), paying appropriate homage to the greatest movie of the '90s. And if you haven't seen the disco-musical-biblical-allegory disaster The Apple (MGM Home Video) yet, hurry up and jump on the bandwagon for what promises to be the next midnight movie sensation. Also worth seeking out: The Raquel Welch Collection, featuring Myra Breckinridge, One Million Years B.C., Fathom, Bandolero! and Mother, Jugs & Speed (Fox Home Entertainment); Dracula Has Risen From the Grave, Taste the BIood of Dracula, and Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed (all Warner Home Video); Dallas: Season One (Warner Home Video); Roller Boogie (MGM Home Video).

Keep it gay

Whether or not you hit one of the many lesbian and gay film festivals going on around the country, you can have your own at home with the sexy Leaving Metropolis (Wolfe Home Video); the Mexican family drama The City of No Limits (Fox Home Entertainment); and the lesbian softball romance Maggie & Annie (Culture Q Connection). Queer filmmaker John Schlesinger's The Day of the Locust(Paramount Home Video) makes its DVD premiere this summer, along with Joel Schumacher's The Lost Boys (Warner Home Video) and Richard Glatzer's Grief(TLA Video). (And if you missed The Secret Lives of Dentists (Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment), an excellent film with a script by Longtime Companion's Craig Lucas, this is the perfect time to catch it.)

Also worth seeking out: The Wedding Banquet (MGM Home Entertainment); Connie and Carla (Universal Home Video); Six Feet Under: The Complete Second Season (HBO Video); The Dreamers (Fox Home Entertainment); The Lesbian Romance Collection and The Best of Gay Britain (both from First Run Features); Cock & Bull Story (Wolfe Home Video); Punks director Patrik-Ian Polk's Noah'sArc (TSBB Productions); and faves The Incredibly True Adventures of Two Gifts in Love and Love! Valour! Compassion! (both New Line Home Entertainment).
