Bob Massie has led Chemical Abstracts Service, a division of the American Chemical Society, since 1992. He came to CAS with an extensive background in publishing, having served last as president and CEO of what is now Thomson Gale. Prior to that, he spent 8 years with the Torstar organization, publisher of Canada's largest newspaper and owner of the largest paperback book-publishing operation in North America. While with Torstar, Massie managed 10 global subsidiaries and joint ventures in Asia, Latin America, and Europe.

Originally trained in law and business, Massie holds a combined J.D./M.B.A. from Columbia University. While he practiced law for several years, both in the Middle East (with a Tehran, Iran, firm in the mid-1970s) and with Washington, D.C., firm Covington and Burling, he became interested in business during a stint with McKinsey and Co. in New York.

Massie sees the strategic combination of technology and content as the cornerstone of sustained competitive advantage in the information industry. Innovations such as SciFinder, SciFinder Scholar, and STN Express have embodied that view. …
