Each year the U.K. national newspaper The Guardian publishes its list of the top 100 most influential players in the British media: the MediaGuardian 100. Since it is influence in the U.K. that is being ranked, it's not surprising that the list is populated mostly by British TV executives, press barons, and the odd politician or two--many of whom will not be household names in other parts of the world. However, the number-one spot goes to Rupert Murdoch, world-renowned News Corp. chairman and chief executive. He replaces last year's number one, Greg Dyke, the former director general of the BBC, who falls to number 89 following his resignation over the Hutton report.

At number 55 resides Reed Elsevier chief executive Crispin Davis. With a company turnover reported as nearly $9 billion and a worldwide staff of 35,000, The Guardian entry describes Davis as "the consummate big-business boss" and reminds us that he was awarded a knighthood recently for services to the information industry. …
