AP NewsAlerts are one of a number of new features added to The Associated Press Line of news services delivered to corporate and database customers. AP users will not have immediate access to top economic indicators and other critical breaking news with AP NewsAlerts, instantly transmitted one-line bulletins.

"There are certain items in the business world that won't wait," said AP's director of Information Services, Chris Pederson. "Our customers have told us they want top-line economic indicators out of Washington as soon as they can get them. We have put the process in place now that allows us to deliver that information within seconds of its release."

AP then writes a detailed report within a few minutes of the initial AP NewsAlert. The report will include such information a economists' reaction to the news and the expected impact of the news upon business. Other news items deemed equally urgent will also be handled in the same timely fashion. AP real-time news is carried on 16 database services, including CompuServe, Dialcom, NewsNet and Prodigy. …
