Stemmy Receives NSPA Golden Quill Award

The NSPA Editorial Review Board has selected Thomas J. Stemmy, CPA, of Greenbelt, Maryland, as this year's recipient of the NSPA golden Quill Award. Created to honor and encourage outstanding member-written feature articles in the National Public Accountant, the award carries with it a $250 cash prize and commemorative plaque as well as recognition in the Society's publications and annual convention.

Stemmy was selected for his article, "Hitting Below the Line: New Rules For Employee Benefit Expenses," which appeared in the October 1991 issue of the NPA. In his article, Stemmy explains that as business deductions grow more restrictive under Congress' new progressive tax policy, individuals seeking reimbursement for business expenses must rely on tax advisers for alternative plans/options.

An active member of the National Society of Public Accountants since February 1986, Stemmy is a senior partner with the firm of Stemmy, Tidler & Morris, P.A. The practice primarily offers tax, accounting, financial and estate planning services.

A tax specialist and consultant for 28 years. Stemmy holds a bachelors degree in economics from Villanova University in Villanova, Pennsylvania (1960); and a masters degree in management science from the National Graduate University in Washington, D.C. (1977).

He began his work in accounting in 1960 as a federal tax auditor for the Internal Revenue Service. After three years with the IRS, he worked briefly for the Washington, D.C., government as a tax auditor. From 1963 to 1973, he ran his own firm T. J. Stemmy & Co. in College Park, Maryland. In 1973, he opened a firm a Greenbelt, Maryland, called Stemmy, Tidler & Co., the predecessor of his current firm current firm of Stemmy, Tidler & Morris, P.A.

In addition to his practice, Stemmy is a faculty member at the University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland, where he teaches federal taxation and has been an advisor in the cooperative education program. …
