There may appear to be little connection between managing an ecological farm in the rainforest and being chief executive of Snapshots International, Ltd., the market research publisher. While it may not be the most recognized career path to the upper echelons of the information profession, it is nonetheless the path taken by Debra Curtis.

After studying graphic design in college and following a quick stint setting up a taxi firm, Curtis became production manager at the U.K.'s largest specialist textile printer, where she quickly learned about providing a client-facing service. She then traveled to the Middle East and Asia Pacific. Eventually returning to the U.K., Curtis held management roles in logistics before joining Datamonitor in 1996. It was here, while working with Ignacio Braga on the original Snapshots, that Curtis recognized the gap in the market for a well-researched, cost-effective, wide-ranging market overview product. Curtis briefly moved to a Scandinavian ergonomic furniture supply company before she was invited back to the then-independent Snapshots International in March 2000. …
