Desperate but Not Serious: Out Creator Marc Cherry Dishes Desperate Housewives, One of the New Season's Most Eagerly Awaited Shows

He's the gay man who makes up the women that gay men love. Marc Cherry (The Golden Girls, The Golden Palace) is back as the creator, writer, and executive producer of the ABC show Desperate Housewives, a project he views "as a condo soap opera." It's a hermetically sealed suburb where "it's at its best when these women do something that's a little twisted--when they do something they really shouldn't. Perhaps the viewers will look at it as a dramatic soap opera that has more than a few laughs."

Whatever you want to call it, Cherry loves writing for women. "As a gay man who grew up in the suburbs of Orange County, Calif., I had a lot of girlfriends, and I understood their perspective. I guess I get to be bitchy and dishy and sarcastic and vulnerable and all those things I feel that I am, and for some reason those qualities don't usually get put on men on network TV."

When he last wrote for a male-centered show, the ill-received Some of My Best Friends (based on the film Kiss Me, Guido), he found it infuriating. "I remember the critics killed us. They kept talking about the stereotypes. …
