Apple Announces Mixed-Environment Imaging Strategy

Apple Computer, Inc. has expanded the market for its line of printers and scanners by further supporting customers in mixed environments, where users work with both Apple Macintosh computers and DOS systems running Windows. Apple introduced two new products for mixed-environments, the Apple OneScanner for Windows and the Personal LaserWriter NTR. Apple will also provide more cross-platform optimization on future imaging products.

The Apple Personal LaserWriter NTR is a low-cost, high-speed RISC-based laser printer, the first in the Apple laser family to add a parallel port to optimize the interface with DOS/Windows personal computers. Windows users already have the software for Apple's LaserWriters included in the printer setup. Like all previous LaserWriters, it also has RS-232 (serial) and AppleTalk connections built in and it uses a new "all-ports-active" technology that lets it operate seamlessly for all users. Because it has both PostScript and TrueType engines in ROM for speedy page-description generation, it promises to be the fastest laser printer in its class. In independent benchmark testing in both the Macintosh and Windows operating environments, the NTR printed graphics and test-based documents up to three times faster than competing printers. …
