In that crazy period between Thanksgiving and Winter Break, students hustle to finish things, get excited about the myriad of winter holidays, and simply get wound up. It's easy to get overwrought and overwhelmed. I always thought that Christmas and Hanukkah ought to be postponed until mid-January for the sake of teacher sanity.

What can you do to provide rich learning experiences for your students and provide for your own mental health? First, take care of yourself. Take an extra vitamin, get an extra hour's sleep over the weekend. Staying healthy can alleviate a lot of stress.

Second, try to plan less strenuous projects for this time. I know the tendency is to plan semester-ending grand projects or presents.

If you teach secondary school, make sure there's time to critique, test, and grade. You have a better sense now of how long things take; be realistic, leave a little extra room, and be firm about deadlines. …
