Once again, this special annual issue of the magazine is a chance to celebrate the astonishing vitality of opera in Canada. While the Opera Canada Awards, now in their 5th year, focus on outstanding individuals, the celebration of their achievements is also a celebration of our grand tradition of opera and music theatre in all its variety and depth.

This year's honorees--mezzo Judith Forst, conductor Mario Bernardi and bass Joseph Rouleau--are still very active contributors to opera and music as performers, as teachers and mentors, and as individuals whose passion and commitment have enriched both audiences and the profession. As it happens, Forst is based in British Columbia, Bernardi in Ontario and Rouleau in Quebec. But, as you will read in our tributes, the trajectories of their distinguished careers have recognized neither domestic nor international borders.

Among the arts, music wears its universality on its sleeve, which is perhaps why opera has moved more effectively than conventional theatre to break down linguistic barriers through the now-widespread use of surtitles as an integral part of staging. (The Canadian Opera Company, then under the leadership of Lotfi Mansouri, the Master of Ceremonies for this year's Rubies Awards gala, was the ground-breaking pioneer in this development.) Opera may have started out as an entertainment for the privileged in Italian court theatres, but it wasn't that long before opera professionals were working an international circuit, as they do today. Though the name of this magazine suggests it is limited in its geographic coverage, it is, of course, not. We are not only about the development of opera in Canada but also about the development of the Canadian contribution to opera around the world. The same is true of the Opera Canada Awards. Our honorees are Canadian professionals, but we are recognizing them for their contributions to the art form at home and abroad. …
