The Consortium for School Networking (CoSN) recently announced a new initiative that provides educational technology leaders, superintendents and policymakers with resources they can use to ensure privacy and safety for their school systems.

Cyber Security for the Digital District offers resources and tools that are designed to help school districts raise awareness both within and outside of their communities by assessing the current status of their network security, evaluating their strengths and weaknesses, and then making needed improvements.

According to CoSN, this is the first phase of a three-year, vendor-neutral project using both government and private sector support. One of those private sector companies is Symantec Corporation, and Tom Mazich, vice president of the public sector for Symantec, says of the new initiative, "These tools provide a way for administrators and technical leaders to have a productive dialogue about network security issues so a district's technology decisions are guided by its education mission rather than the other way around. …
