Countdown to Election: Stacks, Stacks, and More Stacks

Article excerpt

For a historical perspective on the election process, you may want to check out Countdown to Election. The four programs that make up this HyperCard-based package can be purchased separately, but they have been grouped together (and reduced in price) to take advantage of the hoopla surrounding the 1992 election campaign. Three of the four are small, single-purpose programs that may fill a particular need in your classroom. Facts & Faces of the U.S. Presidents is a rather simple, quiz-style educational trivia game. U.S. Presidents Clip Art offers HyperCard users a collection of presidential portraits. And State Smart is a six-stack collection with contour and topographical maps plus a list of Congressional representatives for each state in the U.S.

With its largely text-based approach and massive amount of data, this program is not likely to engage the typical student as quickly as On the Campaign Trail or the multimedia databases described below, but in the hands of the fight teacher, it is a tremendous resource.

In addition to spotlighting the major political parties (as well as those that were never able to carry a single state), the program includes information on every candidate who ever ran for president; the electoral college results from each election; voting records for every state; descriptions of the important issues of the day; pictures and performance ratings of all 41 men who succeeded in winning the post; and much more. …
