I happen to have a January birthday, so this time of year is doubly good for thinking about fresh starts, goals, and all those other euphemisms for resolutions. My goals don't tend to change too much from year to year: spend more time with my family; eat healthier; find some way to get more exercise so I can go to the beach this summer without hiding in the sand.

As I get older, though, exercising and eating right seem to be more about being in good health than about looking good. This point was made clear to me when several Sunset staff members met with the American Heart Association to talk about heart disease and how to help our readers prevent it. Over a lunch of salmon and roasted vegetables, we all talked about the importance of reaching women in their 30s and 40s, a group the AHA says is increasingly at risk. That discussion inspired our Take the West to Heart special section (page 73), which includes family-friendly recipes, great ways to fit exercise into your schedule, stress-reduction strategies, and more. …
