Canadian brewer Labatt is to take its first stake in UK pub retailing with the announcement this week of a joint venture - Maple Leaf Inns - with independent pub operator Pubmaster.

Labatt's first move into UK pub retailing and brings with it a national distribution deal. The lager has already climbed into the UK top ten since its launch four years ago.

"Our job now is to consolidate our position as one of the UK's leading brands before expanding elsewhere in continental Europe," says Bruce Peer, president of Labatt Breweries of Europe.

"But we're here to grow and we have to take advantage of opportunities," he adds.

The deal allows Pubmaster, formerly Brent Walker Inns and Retail, to extend its 1974 estate by up to 2000 pubs without having to make the capital outlay.

Labatt is providing all funds for the leasing of 500 pubs and purchase of another 500 initially, for Maple Leaf Inns to run under Pubmaster's Threshold Inns free house brand. …
