Golden Years: Robust Education and Scholarship Programs Highlight This Chapter's Half-Century Achievements

Houston Chapter No. 28 turns 50 this year, but from the youthful exuberance stemming from its chapter leaders and the continually growing member ranks, you'd think it was still in its teens. To mark the milestone the chapter has planned a gala event in May, which will be attended by IREM President Tony Smith.

Because of the chapter's size, more than 500 members, it is able to host between 12 and 15 classroom courses per year with great success. However, 2004 Chapter President Lynn Kelleher, CPM, wanted to push things further.

"Our recent member survey told [chapter leadership] that education is the most important thing we offer," Kelleher said. "This past year we decided to focus all of our resources on one goal, that being putting every dollar the chapter earns back into scholarship funds to help forward the education cause."

Chapter Administrator Jo D. Miller concurred: "The chapter wants to be known in the city for doing one thing really well, especially since we realized our competing organizations have cut back on education. Now, we're offering more seminars to attract more interest in the chapter."

On an annual basis, the chapter awards $16,000 in scholarship funds for local education courses. …
