One of Greene King's brands, Hungry Horse, won the retail brand of the year in the Pub Food Awards in 2004. What do you put that down to?

The fun nature of the brand and the company. As a marketer you feel you can come up with all sorts of ideas. It's a very open forum. We often brainstorm with the retail outlet managers, too. And, of course, we spend a lot of time in the pub.

So, besides getting down the pub a lot, what are the perks of the job?

Because the marketing department is responsible for menu development and marketing, we get to taste all the new dishes, which is fun. We have food development days when we taste everything from starters to desserts.

Also, you often find a new bottle of Greene King beer on your desk to take home.

Do you have to be a bit of a foodie to enjoy it then?

Yes, you do. If you are on a diet, that is no good in this business.

Although it is a fun job, it can be tough too because of the hours. You have to have a sense of humour and be a people person. For an event the other day, my colleague Dave dressed up as 'Fifi La Derriere' and I was a bar wench.

What are the hours like?

Long, but when you are busy and it is varied it does not feel like a long day. We occasionally work evenings too; I am off to a Karaoke night tonight. …
