Today it is possible for treatment to become more cost-effective by automating provider processes and streamlining the method of care delivery. Addiction treatment providers have available realistic and state-of-the-art technology to aid them in reaching their objectives; the challenge is to automate the enterprise in a manner that achieves buy-in from all levels.

The addictive disease treatment industry--once predominantly a cottage business staffed with extraordinarily dedicated, often recovering, clinically non-degreed employees and volunteers--is changing into a emerging system of care with increased emphasis on the business aspects of the field, which has traditionally been a mission-driven industry.

Currently providers are starting to be more conscious of the bottom line. Even though the field continues to behave as a cottage industry, it is increasingly facing a proliferation of outside pressures, including such forces as:

* Highly regulated federal, state and local governmental entities with constantly evolving procedures, licenses, staffing requirements, clinical guidelines, HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) requirements, building codes, and so forth.

* Strict accrediting bodies with authoritative rules, measurements and outcome guidelines.
