University of Nevada Goes Online, Loads IAC's Frame Numbers

Faculty, students and citizens of Nevada now have statewide access to a series of library catalogs and other electronic journal citation indexes through the Nevada Academic Library Information System (NALIS), which has gone online. The University of Nevada, Las Vegas; the University of Nevada, Reno; and four community colleges, supporting a total student body of over 58,000, are using NALIS. Operating on a DEC VAX 6000/420, BRS Software Products's BRS/Search full-text management and retrieval software is the search engine for the journal citation indexes.

BRS Software Products has improved end-user access to information by adding Information Access Company's (IAC) microfilm cartridge and frame numbers to BRS' loaded databases. These numbers correspond to IAC's numbering system for the microfilm cartridges of both the magazine and business collections. Users now can search the citations and use the cartridges and frame numbers to go directly to the correct microfilm.

NALIS is one of the first installations in the country to have this capability. Previously, when these numbers were not included, the user had to go through the added step of looking up the number to find the article. …
