I walked into one of our local banks and said to the teller, "These walls are sure bare." She replied, "You're an art teacher. Do something about it." I was shocked, saying, "Are you serious?"

I immediately met with the bank manager, and brought along a few pieces of my high-school students' work. She was impressed with the 18 x 24" (46 x 61 cm) graphite portraits. The manager suggested I check with one of the local frame shops to see if they would help me out with matting and framing. She offered to give them free advertising for a year. I approached the frame shop and told them my story. They were more than happy to make four hinged mats and spring-clip frames to display students' artworks.

For three years, I displayed both my junior and senior high-school students' 18 x 24" (46 x 61 cm) art-works behind the tellers. We changed the four pieces every month, including months during the summer. …
