Online Journal of Current Clinical Trials Debuts

Article excerpt

The Online Journal of Current Clinical Trials (OJCCT), the world's first peer-reviewed medical journal distributed by computer, began publication on July 1. OJCCT is a joint venture of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and OCLC. AAAS developed the editorial content and focus of the journal, and OCLC developed its programming and technology.

Dr. Edward J. Huth, Editor of OJCCT, called the journal a "new era in scholarly publishing for medicine." In an OJCCT editorial, Dr. Richard Nicholson, Executive Officer of AAAS, wrote:

"...the pure economics of today's

world will inevitably drive publishers

to electronic publishing...In my

opinion, the economic driver is inexorable,

we actually prefer paper journals,

the day will nevertheless come

when only electronic dissemination

will be used. In other words, it is not

a question of |if,' only |when.'

OCLC and AAAS are betting that

our timing is right and we will be

positioned to lead this trend, setting

important standards for scholarly

publishing as we go."

The journal is interactive, fully integrated with its database, and typeset for both display and printing. The electronic journal is currently available from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. (Eastern Daylight Time), Monday-Friday; 8 a.m.-8 p.m., Saturdays; and 12 p.m.-8 p.m. on Sundays. The OCLC User & Network Support Section provides software and telecommunications support for users during the OJCCT's normally scheduled hours of availability. …
