Welcome to the New Protection Update

Article excerpt

Dear Protection Update Readers:

I am delighted to welcome you--our more than 4,000 long-time readers and 65,000 new ones--as subscribers to the International Safety Equipment Association's (ISEA's) new Protection Update newsletter. From now on, you will receive the quarterly Protection Update bound into Occupational Hazards--widely considered to be a leading source of news and information for health and safety professionals. Your other 2005 issues will arrive in April, July and October. We are excited to be part of this groundbreaking partnership with Penton Media Inc.

Some of you may not be familiar with Protection Update or possibly even with ISEA. Let me tell you a little about both.

ISEA is the trade association for safety equipment. Your hard hats, safety glasses, earplugs, respirators, fall protection, protective clothing and gloves, high-visibility vests, eyewash/showers and so forth most likely were made by ISEA members. Our more than 70 member companies provide products that are known and trusted to keep workers out of harm's way worldwide.

ISEA's primary mission is protecting workers. To fulfill its mission, ISEA develops product performance standards, represents members' interests before government agencies, and provides a forum for positive and productive industry action.

Standards are essential to safety equipment because they establish a level of performance for a product that's designed to provide protection. ISEA develops and publishes ANSI standards for many types of safety equipment, and is represented on nearly 30 other national and international standards committees and panels.

You can learn more about standards in the article "What Are Safety Equipment Standards and Where Do They Come From" in this Protection Update.

While ISEA members may be scattered across the United States and around the world, our association is located where we believe we can do the most good, in the nation's capital. Our Arlington, Va., office is just across the river from Washington, within sight of the U.S. Capitol. This gives us quick and constant access to the federal officials whose decisions affect worker safety and health.

I encourage you to visit to learn more about ISEA.

We launched Protection Update in 2000 as part of an outreach program to increase safety equipment awareness and use in construction, and reduce injuries and fatalities in that particularly dangerous industry.

Protection Update's purpose has been to provide safety and health leaders with news you can use, today and tomorrow, to protect workers better. …
