Africa: Oil Company Fights Malaria; the Exxon Mobil Corporation Has Donated U$5m in Community Grants to Help Combat Malaria in Africa, Reports Tom Okello

As a large scale business with major oil and gas production operations in five African countries, Exxon-Mobil is keenly aware of the devastating impact malaria has on individuals, communities and economies. In response, the company has donated $5m, comprising 24 grants to cover, among others, programmes that promote research and development of new medicines.

"Africa is a significant and growing contributor to the world's energy economy, but diseases like malaria continue to wreak havoc on the health of the African people," said Rex Tillerson, president of the Exxon Mobil Corporation. "Through our Africa Health Initiative," he continued, "we are working to support governments and health care providers to reduce the impact of this devastating disease."

Recipients of funding from the grants will include the Academy for Educational Development/Netmark which teaches preventive actions and distributes discount vouchers for long-lasting insecticide-treated bed nets to pregnant women in Cameroon, Ghana and Zambia.

Others include Africare's community-based malaria prevention and early treatment in Angola--particularly concentrating on refugees and internally displaced persons; the American Red Cross which will provide a free bed net for every adult who accompanies a child under five to measles vaccination campaigns in Equatorial Guinea and Chad; Medicines for Malaria Venture which supports the development and discovery of new anti-malaria drugs; and Project Hope which will establish a "Village Health Bank" pilot programme in Mozambique that combines micro-credit lending with health education. …
