Welcome to the "official" first issue of Teacher Librarian: The Journal for School Library Professionals published by Scarecrow Press, Inc. We say "official" because much of the planning and the content result from the good work of the previous staff. We must acknowledge their work and the great assistance and guidance they have provided to us. Most notably we are grateful to Michelle Rudert For overseeing the transition and to Michelle Mallette, whose editorial hand contributed greatly to the content of this issue and will be reflected in a few more forthcoming issues. As expected, Ken provided and continues to provide much help, and he graciously responded to my interruptions of his recent holiday in Hawaii.

While we plan to announce the new editor in the next issue, I am very pleased to announce that we have appointed Kim Tabor to the position of managing editor. Kim will direct the day-to-day operations of the journal, coordinating everything from articles, columns, and reviews to production, advertising, and printing. Kim is a long-time Scarecrow Press editor who most recently directed Scarecrow's flagship series of historical dictionaries. Kim has also been and will remain responsible for two of our most important and critically acclaimed series: Scarecrow Studies in Young Adult Literature, with series editor Patty Campbell, and the It Happened to Me series for teens, with series editor Arlene Hirschfelder.

As I read this month's articles, I was struck by the number of serious operational issues that each article addressed and even more so by the number of additional issues that each raised, directly and subtly. Nothing, however, is as astonishing as the realization that all of the issues, no matter how disparate, are related and contribute to a complex continuum For which teacher librarians are responsible. …
