Ann Axell Berglund, 83, a librarian at the Alexandria (Va.) Library for 22 years until her 1988 retirement, died December 16 of cancer. She began her career during the Korean War as special services librarian for U.S. forces in Yokohama, Japan, while her husband fought in the war. While there, novelist James Michener interviewed her during research for his book, The Bridges at Toko-Ri. * Forrest F. Carhart Jr., 87, whose 50-year library career spanned university libraries, ALA, and a library cooperative, died January 7. Carhart served on the staff of the libraries at the University of Michigan, the University of West Virginia, the University of Denver, Iowa State College, and the U.S. Air Force Academy. In 1959, he joined ALA as assistant director of the Library Technology Project, and he became director of ALA's Office for Research and Development in 1963. He left ALA to become executive director of the New York Metropolitan Reference and Research Library Agency (METRO), a cooperative organization of all types of libraries in the New York metropolitan area, in 1972. While at METRO, he built membership from 60 to 140 members and started seminars and educational programs for librarians, a newsletter, and a cooperative acquisition program. He received the 1983 ASCLA Exceptional Achievement Award for leadership in consulting, multitype library cooperation, and state library development. He was an avid collector of books published by the Peter Pauper Press and Armed Forces Editions of literary works produced for GIs during World War II. * Helen Malcolm Cleland, 99, head of the catalog department at the Grosvenor branch of the Buffalo and Erie County (N.Y.) Public Library system from 1927 to 1970, died December 7. She also worked for a year in the State Department library in Washington, D.C., during World War II. * Iris M. Drzewiecki, 75, librarian and teacher at several schools in the Buffalo, New York, area until her 1992 retirement, died December 5. …
