EBSCO Packs More Databases into EBSCOhost Platform

Article excerpt

EBSCO announced that it has added several new databases to its EBSCOhost platform, covering a wide range of indexes, guides, and scholarly content to meet the needs of its audience. Among the newcomers to the platform: access to a suite of databases from the American Psychological Association; a dedicated thesaurus for the Communication & Mass Media Complete; The Music Index from Harmonie Park Press; The New Republic Archive; and the Mental Measurements Yearbook series from the Buros Institute.

Communication Thesaurus Gives Superior Access to Full-Text Content

EBSCO Publishing added a dedicated thesaurus to the Communication & Mass Media Complete (CMMC) database available via EBSCOhost. The new thesaurus was developed by EBSCO to provide benefits such as those available within PsycINFO and Business Source Premier.

CMMC continues to offer a collection of more than 230 full-text journals related to the study of communication and other associated disciplines. This content is supported by database indexing. The bibliographic records that serve as the foundation of CMMC's indexing include such essentials as author-supplied keywords, NAICS/ industry codes, author affiliations, and searchable cited references. Enhanced access is achieved by the specialized terms provided by the Communication Thesaurus for use as subject headings in CMMC. The thesaurus also functions as a searchable authority file, offering researchers another means of searching CMMC (in addition to keyword, journal name, browsable indexes, and other available modes of searching).

With more than 7,300 terms specifically related to the study of communication and associated disciplines, the new thesaurus helps to tailor the research environment of CMMC to the specific needs of its users. A foundation set of Library of Congress subject headings was expanded upon using more than 80 additional resources to create this comprehensive, subject-specific thesaurus. The thesaurus was also constructed in accordance with NISO standards regarding thesaurus development (ANSI/NISO Z39.19). This allows CMMC to provide users with the means to locate the full-text content specifically related to their individual research needs.

Harmonie Park Press Becomes Publishing Partner

EBSCO Publishing and Harmonie Park Press, an international leader in music reference publishing for more than 55 years, have agreed to make The Music Index available through the EBSCOhost platform in the coming months. Published since 1949, The Music Index is the single most comprehensive annual subject-author guide to music literature.

According to Mark Herrick, vice president of business development at EBSCO Publishing: "This database fits very well with our growing collection of resources covering the arts and humanities." EBSCO Publishing continues to supply niche databases that represent the definitive reference resource for a given area of study. Nearly 150 databases are now offered via the EBSCOhost platform.

The editor-librarians at Harmonie Park Press have surveyed data from more than 725 international music periodicals from more than 40 countries in 23 languages. Topics covering every aspect of classical and popular music are thoroughly categorized according to an internal subject list that includes both subject and geographic headings. Covering all styles and genres of music, The Music Index cites book reviews, obituaries, new periodicals, and news and articles about music, musicians, and the music industry. The thoroughness of indexing and subject heading research, along with comprehensive coverage of the music field, makes The Music Index a resource for both the novice scholar and the experienced academician.

EBSCOhost's inherent linking capabilities allow subscribing libraries to establish links from citations in The Music Index to corresponding full text found in their other EBSCOhost databases as well as e-journal collections. …
