Joan Airoldi, director of the Whatcom County (Wash.) Library System, won the PEN/Newman's Own FirstAmendmentAward April 20 for refusing to comply with an FBI subpoena for the names of patrons who had checked out a biography of Osama bin Laden. Airoldi will donate the $25,000 to create a library foundation in the county. * Sara Castle, youth librarian at the Pinckney Community (Mich.) Public Library, has won the 2005 Michigan Library Association Loleta D. Fyan Award for making her library's youth department an important part of the community. * Alexis Ciurczak, public services librarian at Palomar College in San Marcos, California, is serving as a Fulbright Fellow at the Second Air Division Memorial Library in Norwich, England. * Jacque Dessino, electronic services librarian at Tidewater Community College in Portsmouth, Virginia, has received the school's 2005 special achievement award for faculty for initiating virtual reference service at the Virginia Community College System's libraries. * Linda Dobb, executive vice president and former dean of libraries at Bowling Green (Ohio) State University, has won the Library Mosaics/Council on Library/Media Technicians' 2005 Outstanding Supporter of Support Staff award. * Lesley Farmer, coordinator of the library media teacher program at California State University at Long Beach, recently received the Gold Disk Award for sustained achievement in educational technology for teaching and education from Computer-Using Educators. * Diane M. Public Library, has received the Clinton Township Area Optimist's 2005 Excellence in Education Award. * The Romance Writers of America named Scottsdale (Ariz.)
