We Must Build a Strong Social Movement

In the action Canada Network (ACN), we maintain that the next federal election will be one of the most critical in this country's history. We cannot afford another four years of rule by a right wing government. The corporate agenda has torn apart our economy and society. We must prevent the election of another right-wing regime -- be it a Tory majority, a Tory-Reform minority, or even a Liberal majority.

Our goal is to elect a progressive-minded government with a mandate to dismantle the destructive corporate agenda and to bring forth a national program of economic, social and environmental reconstruction. The lynch-pin is the abrogation of the US-Canada Free Trade deal. After all, the only chance we have of restoring the policy instruments and tools required to rebuild this country is to terminate the FTA (and if necessary, NAFTA).

Under present circumstances, the best we can hope for here would be the election of either an NDP-led minority, or a Liberal-led minority with the NDP holding the balance of power.

As a social movement, the ACN has a key role to play in broadening the base for progressive party politics. Through concerted education and action events with its member constituencies, the ACN can potentially reach over half the adult population in Canada.

Following the October 26 referendum, the ACN will launch an ongoing national campaign leading up to and through the next federal election. The campaign is designed to strengthen public opposition to the corporate free trade agenda and to mobilize public support for a set of alternative policies and priorities for rebuilding this country. …
