What is the main marketing challenge you face?

To get as many people as possible to try our product; sampling and PR work best, but advertising and promotion are also important. Last November we ran a competition to win 'The most decadent weekend of your life'. We had a fantastic web-based response which gave us great customer insight.

Are you pestered by friends and family for freebies?

All the time, and usually I give in. But the strangest request we have had was from a hot-air balloonist in Tenerife who wanted to experiment with our puds at very high altitude.

How many UK marketers are there?

We have a commercial team of five covering sales and marketing.

Are Gu marketers involved in product testing?

Everyone at Gu is involved. We have chocolate happy hour at 3pm, when there is a danger of nodding off. It keeps us going for the rest of the day.

Do you have to be a chocoholic to work at Gu?

Of course, but brains and passion help too.

Is Gu involved in event sponsorship?

So far no, but we are considering it.

What are the perks of the job?

Working on a hip brand which is going places.

How do you come up with new ideas?

By getting out and discovering new shops and trends. I like walking around delis and patisseries in London, Paris and Brussels. …
