The Municipal Association of South Carolina announced the winners of its 2005 Municipal Achievement Awards.

Winners were recognized at MASC's Annual Meeting at Hilton Head Island, S.C., July 2831.

Town of Trenton: Trenton Visitor's Center

Trenton houses its library and visitor's center in the same building and increases access to both.

The town's Town Square is designated as an official site along the South Carolina National Heritage Corridor and the building housing the Visitor's Center is a donation.

City of Woodruff: Fire Station Renovation

Population Category 1,001-5,000

Woodruff's Fire Department transformed an abandoned National Guard Armory into a working fire department with a budget of $20,000 and donated materials and labor.

Surplus and donated items were used to turn the $20,000 budget into a $50,000 project.

City of Marion: High School Renovations for City Use

Population Category 5,001-10,000

Marion uses a restored, formerly abandoned high school campus for multiple city functions.

For example, the auditorium hosts concerts, public service programs and community events and the classroom space is used for a community fitness center, supported by a FEMA grant for physical fitness equipment for the city's firefighters.

City of Orangeburg: Spray Park

Population Category 10,001-20,000

Orangeburg has a water spray park for children to cool off during the summer months. It is the only city-owned and operated water park in South Carolina.

The park includes a 6,000-square foot rubberized mat with spray features that allows children to run around, but eliminates the need for a lifeguard. …
