Adwatch: Walkers - 'G Lineker & Motorhead'

I don't know about you, but Gary Lineker has always confused me.

Even as a footballer, there was something incomprehensible about his success.

Sure, he scored loads of goals, but it was never immediately obvious why, or indeed how.

Aside from committing the crime of playing for Leicester City - which, as a Coventry fan, was never going to endear him to me - he has always been difficult to actively dislike; which may partially explain his astonishing endurance as brand spokesman for Walkers crisps.

Much like his tenure as Match of the Day anchorman, few thought his early ads promised a TV career that would extend into 2005. While both strands of his televisual CV divide people - the latest incarnations of MOTD have attracted the ire of football writers for their unimaginative delivery - his Walkers ads seem, of late, to have improved.

It is Lineker's apparent willingness to do (and dress up as) absolutely anything that has brought the campaign to new heights. …
