CASPR, Inc. has introduced MarcReader, a Macintosh application which allows users to easily read and browse through files containing standard MARC records. In its native format, MARC data is difficult to read, preventing users from easily checking the data. This can cause confusion and frustration in dealing with a necessary element of automated library systems.

Although MARC is an accepted standard which is used widely, each provider of MARC records may choose from several options for local information within the standard, which results in a number of varying versions. In orde to import these versions successfully into a library automation system, the user must know how they vary. MarcReader provides a method of previewing MARC records and files before importing them into a proprietary display format. It can also be used to view MARC records created as original cataloging, after exporting and prior to importing to another system such as a union catalog or a cataloging utility.

Any file containing MARC records can be opened without importing or changing the data in any way. The user can see what fields of data are included, as well as the type of data in each field. …
