OK, I'm the first to admit it. I like shoes. I like them even better when I can get designer shoes at a good price. That's what brought me into a local DSW store with my credit card last spring.

Then, at the beginning of the summer, I received a letter in the mail. It began: "As you may have read or seen in local or national media reports, DSW was the victim of a significant theft of customer data including credit card and debit card numbers."

The letter reassured that: "In the last few weeks, we have investigated this theft and taken every step we can to prevent further data theft of this nature."

But how? The letter continued: "Within days of our discovery of this theft, we provided the stolen credit and debit card numbers to American Express, Discover, VISA and MasterCard."

That was reassuring. But the first sentence in a subsequent paragraph was in bold italic type for emphasis: "We cannot know if your credit card or debit card will or will not be used by the thieves to commit a fraud." This was not encouraging. …
