This supplement is a celebration of 50 years of television advertising on ITV. It's not about how clever or funny the ads were, but how they have played a key part in the continuing success of our customers.

We have focused on 50 of the most famous brands of the past half-century and highlighted the role that TV has played in driving their business. Picking out just 50 names has been pretty hard and, inevitably, some people will feel we have missed out brands that should be in here.

In marking this anniversary, we wanted to use this supplement to show just how important TV has been in delivering success to those customers. Later this week, Marketing's fellow Haymarket title Campaign will publish a supplement celebrating the creativity that has helped make these brands famous.

From its advent in 1955, TV advertising put a powerful new communications tool at the disposal of UK advertisers. Brands that have invested in TV since then have reaped the benefit. For some of our customers it has been an investment that has paid dividends across five decades. …
